Our Children's Messages are often original puppet plays.
Here is an example:
Beverly: Pastor, Pastor quick, you have to do something!
Pastor Diane: What’s the matter Beverly?
Beverly: [hand to face with a large stage whisper aside] That kid has got a K-A-T in church!
Hannah: Beverly, do you mean C-A-T??
Beverly: AHA! She admits it! Trying to SNEAK a CAT into church in that weird backpack!
Hannah: It’s not a back-pack. It’s a pet carrier!
Beverly: BOY are you in TROUBLE now!!!
Pastor Diane: She’s not in trouble Beverly!
Beverly: She’s NOT???
Hannah: Beverly, I asked first and Mom said I could!
Beverly: WHAT??? [Pointing to the pastor] She’s your mother? That’s cheating!
Pastor Diane: What do you mean that’s cheating Beverly?
Beverly: Well, just because she’s your kid, she gets to bring her cat to church… no one else gets
to!
Pastor Diane: Beverly, Daniel Haley is bringing in his cat next week.
Beverly: He IS??
Pastor Diane: Beverly we’ve even had a baby goat in church once.
Beverly: Why did you have a baby goat in here???
Lionel: That’s easy Bev. I’m sure it was because Pastor Diane remembers how much Jesus loved
them?
Beverly: Jesus loved goats?!
Lionel: Baby goats… he said, “Let the little kids come to me!”
Pastor Diane: Well, I think He meant children Lionel.
Lionel: Just kidding, Pastor! [chuckles to self]
Beverly: Wait a minute! Doesn’t someone get mad about animals in church???
Hannah: If something has an important message about God, it’s okay!
Beverly: Are you telling me that cat has something to say about God? Okay, cat, this better be
good… start talking!
Lionel: Beverly, the cat can’t tell us anything!
Beverly: I rest my case! But she’s saying the cat has a message! No offense, pastor, but she’s a
little [makes cuckoo motion]
Pastor Diane: Beverly, Hannah’s cat brings a message by helping us see something about God!
Beverly: Unless God has long fur and whiskers, I am not getting this!
Pastor Diane: Bev. Hannah wanted to bring her cat, Pip, because she loves him. But she also noticed something about him that she wanted to share. Pip has two ears and she has two ears. Pip has two eyes and she has two eyes.
Lionel: Ah, Pastor, I hate to tell you, but when you get to the whiskers and the tail, this message
is going to fall apart!
Pastor Diane: Lionel the differences are important too. Aren’t they Hannah?
Hannah: Right. Pip and I are a little bit alike and a little bit different but we love each other and
the more I pay attention to his behavior, the more I learn about why he does things. And
the more we love to snuggle, right Pip?
Pastor Diane: And that helped Hannah realize that if God could teach her so much about love
and behavior from a cat, God must have even bigger plans for the way people can learn
and grow to love each other, even people who are very different from each other.
Beverly: Wow! Wait till Mom hears this!
Pastor Diane: That’s great Beverly… you’re going to tell your Mom that you learned about how
God wants us to grow into loving others by appreciating the ways we are different as well as the ways we are the same?
Beverly: Not that!
Lionel: Are you going to tell her that, by being patient and gentle with our pets, God helps us
learn a lot about animal behavior?
Beverly: Exactly… I am going to run home right now… I can’t wait to tell her
[disappears as she yells…] Mom! Mom, guess what?! Pastor Diane says we need a cat!
